If you want good fake-bee sounds, you have to buy them

Filed under General by david brooks at 8:16 am

Since out kids are off to college, my wife and I don’t have an excuse to participate in our town’s trick-or-treating (like many communities, Mont Vernon gathers along Main Street for its Halloween candy grab; it’s a great time to see just about everybody in town).

So as not to miss out, for several years we have set up in front of the town cemetery, giving out candy in a decorated booth. This year it’s going to be a Haunted Hive - a fake beehive, with me outside in a beekeepers suit; people have to reach inside to get the candy, and my wife, hiding under the table, will grab them. Great fun!

But to work, it needed the sound of buzzing bees played by the MP3 player under the table. An hour’s Googleing found lots of free bee-sounds online, but none were any good … so we spent 89 cents to buy one off Amazon.com. Who would have guessed you could make money selling fake bee sounds?

(Added note after trick-or-treat is done: It was a blast! People had to reach through a small hole into the “hive” to get their candy, which proved nerve-wracking for lots of kids. Hilarious.)
