“Energy corridor” from Canada through Maine in trouble

Filed under Alternative energy, Energy by david brooks at 8:28 am

Tux Turkel, a Portland Press-Herald reporter who often writes about energy, has a fine story in that paper today about the political and economic problems that crop up when trying to move energy (in the form of electricity, natural gas or petroleum) from one place to another - an issue that will greatly complicate attempts to develop large-scale alternative energy sources.

The story concerns previously announced plans to build an “energy corridor” from New Brunswick, Canada, through Maine, helping carry power from the province’s liquid natural-gas facilities and nuclear plant just over the border (which wants to expand). It sounds good when announced, but the devil’s in the details - including a desire from Maine to get something out of it, and annoyance at some Canadian policies.
