Will climate change even change our soil?

I participated in a conference call Monday in anticipation of the second report from the IPCC about climate change, and wasn’t expecting to hear anything new: sugar maples are threatened, snowpack will fade, New Hampshire will become more like Virginia. Distressing, but not new. Then UNH professor Scott Ollinger mentioned something new: It will even affect our soil. Hey presto, a story is born.

A very good story. I imagine few have even thought about this aspect of climate change.
Another soil-related topic: “arctic” soils. When snowpacks and glaciers melt, the soil beneath is exposed and thawed. The soil contains many organic components, such as methane, a potent greenhouse gase, that may be released, further worsening the greenhouse effect.
