Here are some not-so-practical ideas for getting free energy from the wind. Most of these are mounted on top of buildings, something that I’ve tried my best to shoot down in previous postings. Anyone who has spent time at a working wind farm soon realizes the advantages of laminar flow (non-turbulent) for getting the best life and productivity from a wind generator.
Darius rotors, the vertical axis wind turbines that look like an egg beater, sound like such a neat way to harvest wind energy that there couldn’t possible be any drawbacks. Yet, all of the attempts to scale up to windfarm size have finally been abandoned. Putting wind turbines on top of a very tall tower has proven to the most productive system.
