Super-duper PDAs for Marines to find avian flu
Filed under Uncategorized by david brooks at 10:13 am
Portsmouth-based Global Relief Technologies, which combines GPS, wireless communication and specialzed software into a sort of super-duper Palm Pilot to gather data in the field, has received a $3.5 million contract to help Marine Corps crews track avian flu in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim. Some details from this article in New Hampshire Business Review:
"GRT will provide Marine Corps field crews working in theregion with technology that will enable them to gather informationabout the occurrence of avian flu and relay the information in realtime via satellite to GRT headquarters, where it will analyzed bymission-specific GRT software. It can be accessed by decision makers atorganizations like the World Health Organization, Center for DiseaseControl and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services."
I haven’t heard of this company before. It seems to specialize in government- and charity-related field work at disaster sites or what the Web site calls "insecure environments." An interesting niche.
